Message from the
TCCS Coordinator
Greetings;
Recently I received a report from one of the major new car dealerships in town. It seem that an individual was attempting to purchase a car with a credit card and to have it shipped to California, all over the phone. The buyer provided a credit card number and a faxed copy of his (fraudulent) California ID Card.
Fortunately, the General Manager of the dealership was sharp, did some investigating on her own and identified the fraud before any charges were made to the credit card.
This is just one of the innumerable scams that I see EVERY WEEK! They take many forms, but this is the first that I have seen against a major retailer. Most of the scams that I see originate in Nigeria. (In one recent case that I have, a local Taos woman who I know personally has sent AT LEAST ONE MILLION DOLLARS to Nigeria.)
The number that the purchaser called from in my current case is 510-629-2803. If you do a reverse lookup on this number you will see that it cames back to Alameda, CA IT DID NOT! The Nigerians buy blocks of phone numbers from re-sellers and transfer them to Nigeria to use in large Call Centers which are set up to perpetrate these scams. Please caution all citizens and merchants to be extremely cautious when accepting credit card numbers over the phone for large purchases. In my experience, all of these callers have strong Nigerian accents and speak poor English. This should be a red flag! Also, an internet search for email fraud will show that this number, 510-629-2803 has been used in similar scams across the country.
As all of the calls in the cases that I am aware of have come from outside of New Mexico (and in fact outside of the U.S.A.) most of us will have no jurisdiction in these cases, AND the Feds will not get involved as the amounts scammed fall well below their threshold for involvement. The best thing that I can say is to preach to citizens;
IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT ISNT!

RUN - HIDE - FIGHT
Surviving an Active Shooter EventThe City of Houston has released a video designed to teach people how to react during a workplace shooting by emphasizing a three-word mantra: run, hide, fight. The video was funded with $200,000 in federal grants and was released following last month's movie theater shooting in Colorado. We hope that you will find this video instructive and helpful in both your work environment and your everyday life. Please feel free to forward this around as you see fit to inform others in your company or those close to you.

This might apply to you or someone you know in your family or workplace.
It is better to be prepared than caught by surprise! Please pass along to your family & friends!

Local Law Enforcement Agencies Need Your Help The State Police and the Taos Police Department have recovered numerous items they believe to have been stolen. These items were recovered during traffic stops of known burglary suspects or from persons with suspicious property which these persons could not account for.
The police agencies are asking for any citizen that has recently been burglarized to make a police report so that the recovered items may by identified and returned to the rightful owners. The police have construction tools, jewelry, household electronics and other property.
To make a claim for any recovered item, the owner must be able to prove ownership. The owner must supply proof with receipts, serial numbers, or a photo inventory list to make identification possible and have the property returned.
Take time now to make sure that you can provide proof of ownership for all of your possessions. Proof can be provided with sales receipts, a written list of inventory items with descriptions and serial numbers, photos or videos of your property items. The rightful owner must be able to identify their own property from that of their neighbors.
